چکیده

We have studied the e!ects of two types of noise in simple model neurons with Hodgkin} Huxley voltage-gated channels. We have considered Gaussian noise currents, and Poissondistributed excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. We determined the distribution of interspike intervals, and calculated its average, q ISI , and the coe$cient of variation (CV). The neuronal dynamics is analyzed in the CV}q ISI diagram in terms of equi-noise strength D, and equi-drive I !11 curves. For the Gaussian case one can distinguish four regions of neuronal dynamics. An equivalent analysis is carried out in the Poisson case. In the latter case the behavior is more complicated. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Inhibitory networks of fast-spiking interneurons generate slow population activities due to excitatory fluctuations and network multistability.

Slow population activities (SPAs) exist in the brain and have frequencies below ~5 Hz. Despite SPAs being prominent in several cortical areas and serving many putative functions, their mechanisms are not well understood. We studied a specific type of in vitro GABAergic, inhibition-based SPA exhibited by C57BL/6 murine hippocampus. We used a multipronged approach consisting of experiment, simula...

A blueprint for the spatiotemporal origins of mouse hippocampal interneuron diversity.

Although vastly outnumbered, inhibitory interneurons critically pace and synchronize excitatory principal cell populations to coordinate cortical information processing. Precision in this control relies upon a remarkable diversity of interneurons primarily determined during embryogenesis by genetic restriction of neuronal potential at the progenitor stage. Like their neocortical counterparts, h...

Augmented hippocampal ripple oscillations in mice with reduced fast excitation onto parvalbumin-positive cells.

Generation of fast network oscillations in the hippocampus relies on interneurons, but the underlying specific synaptic mechanisms are not established. The excitatory recruitment of fast-spiking interneurons during hippocampal sharp waves has been suggested to be critical for the generation of 140-200 Hz ("ripple") oscillations in the CA1 area. To directly test this, we used genetically modifie...

Medial septum regulates the hippocampal spatial representation

The hippocampal circuitry undergoes attentional modulation by the cholinergic medial septum. However, it is unclear how septal activation regulates the spatial properties of hippocampal neurons. We investigated here what is the functional effect of selective-cholinergic and non-selective septal stimulation on septo-hippocampal system. We show for the first time selective activation of cholinerg...

A model of atropine-resistant theta oscillations in rat hippocampal area CA1.

Theta frequency oscillations are a predominant feature of rhythmic activity in the hippocampus. We demonstrate that hippocampal area CA1 generates atropine-resistant theta population oscillations in response to metabotropic glutamate receptor activation under conditions of reduced AMPA receptor activation. This activity occurred in the absence of inputs from area CA3 and extra-ammonic areas. Fi...
